Panthenol (Provitamin B5) for the scalp
Panthenol (Provitamin B5) for the scalp: how the molecule penetrates the stratum corneum, converts to pantothenic acid, and soothes the scalp barrier. Cosmetic ingredient research from the ooedn lab.

panthenol for the scalp.
Panthenol is the alcohol form of pantothenic acid — vitamin B5. After topical application it penetrates the stratum corneum and is enzymatically converted into pantothenic acid in the deeper viable epidermis. In topical scalp and skin formulations, panthenol is studied for its humectant action, its ability to reduce transepidermal water loss, and its soothing effect on irritated barrier tissue. Used cosmetically, it sits in the soothing-and-barrier category — a quiet supporting active that improves the comfort and resilience of the scalp surface.

the mechanism
Panthenol is small (mw 205) and amphiphilic, which lets it cross the lipid layer of the stratum corneum and reach the viable epidermis. Once there, tissue enzymes oxidize the terminal hydroxyl into the carboxylic acid form — pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), the precursor to coenzyme A — which the body uses in fatty-acid and ceramide synthesis (PMC9036572).
At the barrier level, panthenol acts as a humectant, binding water into the stratum corneum and reducing transepidermal water loss. Clinical evaluations of dexpanthenol-containing topicals report improvements in skin barrier function, reduced erythema in irritated tissue, and faster epithelial recovery after stress (PMC5849435).
For cosmetic formulators, panthenol is the comfort active — it doesn't fight for the spotlight, but it consistently improves how a formula feels and how the skin or scalp behaves under the irritation of stronger ingredients in the same product.
in scalp milk
We include panthenol in Scalp Milk as the soothing-and-barrier complement to the antioxidant set — caffeine, resveratrol, niacinamide, melatonin, coenzyme Q10, EGCG, tocopherol, and ferulic acid. It supports the scalp's own moisture handling so the rest of the formula can sit on a comfortable, hydrated surface, mist after mist.
