EGCG for the scalp.
EGCG — epigallocatechin gallate — is the principal catechin in green tea (Camellia sinensis) and one of the most-studied plant polyphenols in biomedical literature. In topical scalp formulations, EGCG has been studied for promoting dermal-papilla-cell proliferation, for activating the Erk/Akt and Sonic Hedgehog signaling pathways relevant to the hair cycle, and for elongating cultured human hair follicles ex vivo. Used cosmetically, EGCG is a hero polyphenol antioxidant — chosen for its cell-signaling profile and its compatibility with leave-on scalp delivery.

the mechanism
EGCG is a flavan-3-ol catechin with one of the highest antioxidant capacities of any naturally occurring polyphenol. In hair-follicle research, EGCG has been documented to promote the proliferation of dermal papilla cells (the specialized fibroblasts at the base of the hair follicle that orchestrate the hair cycle) and to elongate cultured human hair follicles ex vivo at micromolar concentrations (Phytomedicine 2007).
At the molecular level, EGCG has been associated with activation of the Erk and Akt cell-survival pathways, and with engagement of the Sonic Hedgehog pathway, which plays a role in the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle. A more recent 2025 study on dermal papilla cell proliferation reinforced these findings using updated assays (ScienceDirect 2025). A 2025 Springer paper documented catechin-rich tea extracts in the context of hair-loss mitigation models (Springer 2025).
For cosmetic formulators, EGCG is valued for its dual role: strong direct antioxidant activity, plus cell-signaling effects that act at the follicle level rather than only on the hair shaft.
